#1 Semiotics
What is Semiotics?
*A very useful info-graph that I found online!
Semiotics is related with 'text' - It is commonly used in written/printed words.
Definition
i.
the study of signs and symbols as elements of communicative behavior; the analysis of systems of communication, as language, gestures, or clothing.
ii.
a general theory of signs and symbolism, usually divided into the branches of pragmatics, semantics, and syntactic.
A science that studies the life of signs within society is conceivable. It would be part of social psychology and consequently of general psychology. I shall call it semiology (from Greek semeion “sign”). Semiology would show what constitutes signs, what laws govern them. -Ferdinand de Saussure (1857-1913)
Basically, semiotics is the study of signs or the study of how culture creates meaning. And signs can be anything, for examples, words, images, gestures, sounds, objects and ideas; they are mediums (media) that create social and cultural meaning. In the sign system, a symbolic system are controlled by rules and conventions accepted by a group that can be learned and transmitted.

Example 1
I found this picture on Google Image :} it's pretty direct explains on Sign, Using Mac Donald as an example, its logo is signified which evoked in our mind sort of like a mental concept. While the slogan 'i'm lovin' it' is the signifier, it has no special meaning till Mac Donald used it as the slogan, it give meaning to it. & our brain will automatically have the Mac Donald logo whenever we see this slogan. Just like Nike's 'Just do it'.
Example 2
A short clip trimmed from Big Bang Theory, 'Semiotics of The Tie' that might gives a brief idea of what is semiotics, and understand it better with the example of THE TIE.
