Base on my notes during the lecture, denotation is what we it is, and connotation is the subtext or the hidden meaning of it. To ensure what exactly denotation & connotation is, I did lil research about it. :}
So,
What is Denotation?
It
attempts to be described as the definition, such as 'literal',
'obvious' or 'commonsense'. While in the case of linguistic signs, it
means what the dictionary tends to provide.
What is Connotation?
It
is used to refer to socio-culture and 'personal' associations, such as ideological or emotional of the sign. These related to the person who
reinterpret it, for instances the class, age, gender, ethnicity of the
interpreter.
Example
 
Kiehls is a skincare products company, and it recently has just launch in Sunway Pyramid. And I was accompany my friend to this shop, at first I was very surprise(shock) to see a skeleton with a white suits on placing right in front of the shop. I also wonder what shop is this, what kind of products they sell? So I used this as my example for denotation & connotation.
Denotation - A skeleton with white suit. Staff/worker are also dress in white suit. And products, skin rescuer.
Connotation - Skeleton + staff with white suit , this combo somewhat reminds me as a clinic or hospital. Staff with white suit looks like doctor , skeleton ...? Why a skincare products use a skeleton in their shop? Does it saying this products will helps them to be beauty from the inside (skeleton) out? Or the overall hospital/clinic association is to gives us a effects of cosmetology or plastic surgery after used their products?
