in this model a sign has two components –
What is signified?
'the signified (signifie) - the concept it represents'

So base on my own understanding of signified is it is the meaning of the idea being portrayed. In my first example above (image1) says that, signified is 'What is it'. To make it easier to understand I insert an image of a kitty (named Lazha), it's the signified.  What is signifier?
'an image in a physical form of a sign that comprehend to our sense'
- Barthes (2009)
'a signifier (significant) - the form which the sign takes'
- Saussure
While signifier is the physical form of the sign, how we (audiences) read the sign. In my first example, it stated that 'how u show what is it' . The signifier would be '猫'. |
