What is language?

According to The media student book, languages can be define as a reflection of the world, which means 'language' itself is already fixed ('the Truth') and it lies in various of things, such as events, people, objects and waiting for it to try to 'express' it. The example that given is realistic photographic. Besides that, the intentions of the 'author' can shapes the language, which is like, the way we express our ideas, feelings that are unique to ourselves. For instance, styles of writing, photography, more towards to the idea of being 'individual'. Further more, it is constructed and inherited, by people using language within the existed cultures to creates/shapes meanings.

Base on my own understanding, and some notes that I jotted down during the lecture. Language is a sounds that only human can produce to communicate whenever we want to or don't want to. It helps on civilization, helps us to know what has happened in the past by communicating to each other. And a miracle thing is that language is like a door given from the God, it will shut off automatically at our age of 5 if we never open the door (to speak). It is also what separate human and animal. As animal can communicate too, but they does not have language. Language can be an identity, expressive, and sometime creative. Examples, science of language, linguist, or philology.

The power of language

To Westerners they are more familiar with magical spells, which is something that can brings you good luck or bad luck from casting a spell. For example, Harry potter has to speak the sentences of the spell in order to him to creates/generates the power to attack or defends.

While to Asians, there are one example that I am familiar with .. which is...Chinese Vampire and vampire exorcist.

This is a movie about Chinese vampire 殭屍 (on the left) and another guy (on the right) which is the vampire exorcist 道長 using a yellow paper with some texts. And he is trying to stick this paper right on the forehead of the Chinese vampire, the yellow paper is the amulet that has the power of the language (the texts) that can freeze the Chinese vampire as long as the paper does not rid off. So it works like a switch, paste on the forehead of Chinese vampire = freeze! paper drop off or rid off = Chinese vampire switch ON again. :} it is like a pause button.

Verbal abuse

The cons of the power of language is verbal abuse, and what is it?

'Although many people have heard sticks and stones may break our bones but words will never hurt us, those who have suffered from verbal abuse know that words do hurt and can be as damaging as physical blows are to the body. The scars from verbal assaults can last for years. These psychological scars leave people unsure of themselves, unable to recognize their true value, their talents and sometimes unable to adapt to life’s many challenges.' by Patricia Evans.

What kind of language or ways of speaking it that defines what is verbal abuse? It includes withholding, bullying, defaming, defining, trivializing, harassing, diverting, interrogating, accusing, blaming, blocking, countering, lying berating, taunting, put downs, abuse disguised as a joke, discounting, threatening, name-calling, yelling and raging.

For example, name-calling. My full name is Yap Pui Ying 叶佩盈, and this name-calling jokes are mostly happen during the primary and secondary school, (of course in College they still do, but just lesser compare to that) peers like to give each person a funny or insulting nicknames. And in my case, my name is pui ying, usually family members would call me 'Ah Ying' , and ah ying that specific 'ying' they associate it with flies. :} Yes. FLIES, not fly but flies. (Which also why even after it has happened so long time ago and I still can remember it) Because in chinese, flies is 苍蝇 which pronounce as 'Chang Ying' or in cantonese 'Wu Ying' . And so after ONE friend had said that, and it spread to the whole class. After awhile, this nickname has almost like written with an invisible pen on my forehead. It's like my tag already. :/ And I hate flies.
