❥ 5. Intertextuality

What is Intertextuality?
It is the interrelationship between texts, especially works of literature; the way that similar or related texts influence, reflect, or differ from each other.

As the word 'texts' is originally relate to literature, novel, poetry, and etc. But has since developed application to cultural artefacts in general to films, fashion, product design, games and more!

Nothing is original.

While in film studies, the use of intertextuality is to reference allusions and influences, or homage. All texts contain traces of other texts, and often considered and echo of other texts that shape and influence it. People can only understand it through their own knowledge of other texts.

  • Pastiche - imitation of a text's feature by another texts. It can be in similar style or feature similar motifs.
  • Parody - where a text is copied in a absurd way that detracts from the original idea.
  • Homage - imitation of a respectful standpoint.

-First examples of intertextuality (The Scream)

Original painting, The Scream by Edvard Munch

The Scream vs Movie:

Movie poster of Scream 4. Can obviously see the significant 'shout' expression in this poster, and the movie name 'Scream' also referencing The Scream.

The Scream vs Character:

The alien figure from a fiction television series Silence (Doctor Who). According to BBC's article, 'The episode featured aliens partly inspired by Edvard Munch's The Scream.' The character has tall humanoids with bulbous heads and bony faces which are similar to The Scream.

The Scream vs Art:

An artwork done by a world-famous artist Sue Coe, named it The Screaming Hen. The distorted/wave-like background, and the chicken figure in the middle has the similar expression to The Scream.

The Scream vs animation(homage)

This is an example of homage animation done by Sebastian Cosor, a Visual Effects Supervisor. His film short animation movie are the winner of Best Romania Animation Movie and Best in Balkanimest Section, Anim'Est 2011 and winner of Filmul de Piatra 2012.

Find out more about THE SCREAM: http://screamtheshortmovie.com/

In his animation movie descriptions, "I was walking along a path with two friends - the sun was setting - suddenly the sky turned bloody red - I paused, feeling exhausted, and leaned on the fence - there was blood a tongues of fire above the blue-black-fjord and the city - my friends walked on, and I stood there trembling with anxiety - and I sensed an infinite scream passing through nature." Edvard Munch, 1893.

The Scream vs animation (parody)

This is an example of parody done by Sebastian Cosor again. The parody version of it, called The Scream  Winter Version. Merely just the scene change to different climate, to winter and the highlight is the figure in the scream has a Christmas hat.

-Second example of intertextuality
Music vs Movie

Step Up Revolution
The similarities of these two videos

  • In Somebody I used to know - Duration: 2.30
  • In Step Up Revolution (art museum part) - Duration: 0.02

Both of them have their bodies painted in colours, and keep constant for awhile then they started to move their bodies parts.

Love both of them, the music are great and the movie is awesome. Although it is not everyone's favorite, but I personally enjoy while watching it! Worth watching. :)

-Third example of intertextuality (Homage)

Original painting, Starry starry night by Van Gogh

Starry starry night vs Poem

That does not keep me from having a terrible need of -- shall I say the word -- religion. Then I go out at night to paint the stars.

--Vincent Van Gogh in a letter to his brother

 The town does not exist
except where one black-haired tree slips
up like a drowned woman into the hot sky.
The town is silent. The night boils with eleven stars.
Oh starry starry night! This is how
I want to die.

It moves. They are all alive.
Even the moon bulges in its orange irons
to push children, like a god, from its eye.
The old unseen serpent swallows up the stars.
Oh starry starry night! This is how
I want to die:

into that rushing beast of the night,
sucked up by that great dragon, to split
from my life with no flag,
no belly,
no cry.

The Starry Night by Anna Sexton

It is a homage from Anna Sexton, in a form of Poetry.

Intertextuality from Star War.

Analyse-
1. Family Guy - has the same/similar font with the original one.
2. Has galaxy as the background
3. Dark Vader(Star War Character) mini version

-Fifth example of intertextuality

Hebe, Taiwanese Singer.
YouTube:

The way she sings that is unusual to most of her songs. The way she holds the mic and she is a big fan of Lana Del Ray.

Lana Del Ray
Both of them have similar singing style in these videos (live).
