What is Semiotics?

A science that studies the life of signs within society is conceivable. It would be part of social psychology and consequently of general psychology. I shall call it semiology (from Greek semeion “sign”). Semiology would show what constitutes signs, what laws govern them.
Ferdinand de Saussure (1 857-1 913)

Taken from: http://www.peripatetic.us/what-is-semiotics.pdf

Basically, semiotics is the study of signs or the study of how culture creates meaning. And signs can be anything, for examples, words, images, gestures, sounds, objects and ideas; they are mediums (media) that create social and cultural meaning.  In the sign system, a symbolic system are controlled by rules and conventions accepted by a group that can be learned and transmitted.

Taken from:

Sign composed of Signifier & signified

Signifier is ...

According to Barthes (2009) signifier is an image in a physical form of a sign that comprehend to our senses.

Example, 'Tree'.

Signified is ...

According to Saussure signified is the idea or concept associated with a signifier, which together constitute the linguistic sign.

Example,

Signification is ...

According to my notes (jot down during lecturer giving lecture), signification is the process of signs being-made-notice-and-understand. :D It is the arbitrary relationship between the signifier and signified.

An easier way to understand what it's all about. :) Found this image really helpful.
